Religious beliefs
and practices may share similarities and have
differences as well. This may be due to the origins
of particular beliefs and practices.
The Near East is an example of religious beliefs
exhibiting similarities and differences due to
their origin.
Beliefs and particular practices share considerable
similarity in the Near East Region because of
the fact that the Sumerians and Akkadians, and
their successors (the Babylonians along with the
Assyrians) come from one root. This is because
they inhabited ancient Mesopotamia, which is today’s
modern Iraq prior to the Christian millennia.
Sumerian writings in their origin was integrated
and transformed by the Akkadians. Their beliefs
in great quantity were assimilated into to the
new environment. Hence there is similarity between
the two.
In addition to this, many Kassites arrived in
Babylonia and other parts of Mesopotamia with
the passage of time. The Kassites’ particular
beliefs are not known, as no writings have been
preserved. However, their religion consisted of
polytheistic beliefs. With the passage of time,
this would have naturally deteriorated.
