The article is
basically a research study that focuses upon the
serial killings committed by Children and Adolescents
over the past 150 years. Here, children and adolescents
is the term given to people who carried out killings
below the age of 18. With regards to the definition
of serial murderers there has been a lot of frenzy
as to how many murders would entitle the killer
to be known as a serial killer. Different researchers
have come up with different murder counts that
in their opinion qualify an individual to fall
into the description of a serial killer. However,
the majority believes that if an individual commits
a second murder he becomes a serial killer. For
adolescents to be known as serial killers it is
essential that he/she commits at least two murders
before the age of 18 years. After a thorough and
systematic inquiry only six juvenile serial murderers
have been identified to this date.
In all of the (six) juvenile serial murder cases
it has been observed that almost every murder,
without the exception of even a single instance,
had a sexual element to it. Besides this, every
other adolescent serial killer shared characteristics
such as impaired capacity to feel guilt, neuropsychiatric
vulnerabilities, serious school problems, historical
behavior of substance abuse, departure from the
crime scene on foot and that victim was killed
at home. Several other factors were also observed
such as that in every killing the victim happened
to have a close relationship with the killer,
the killer had psychopathic personality traits,
killers had sadistic fantasies etc. In the following
lines a brief description of some of the cases
is cited.
Jesse Pomeroy was born in the year 1859 in Boston.
His father was a very cruel man who often used
to physically abuse his children. Jesse was naked
in most of the physical beatings which made him
develop a connection of pain with sexuality. Due
to this and a host of other reasons Jesse had
a terrible childhood. He was considered a loner
who preferred solitary activities and did not
have any friends. Another peculiar trait of his
personality was his stoicalness towards the ferocious
acts that he committed. It is therefore he was
titled as moral idiot. The repulsive tenure of
Jesse serial killing started off at the age of
eleven with a four year boy whom he beat to death.
After this another boy was lured into the same
place who met the same end. In the year 1872,
Jesse was apprehended and sent to a reform school.
On account of his ‘good behavior’
he was released only after eighteen months. Within
a matter of six months he resorted back to his
brutal acts. This time it was a boy of four years
of age found dead in an extremely miserable condition.
A girl of ten years was also reported found missing
who after a month’s search was found buried
in the cellar of her home. Jesse claimed responsibility
of both of these murders. In December 1874 the
court sentenced him to death but later on the
penalty was relaxed to a solitary confinement.
He was held in solitary confinement for forty
one years.
William Heirens was born in Chicago in the year
1928. His family faced a lot of financial difficulties
in the early days of his life. William had problems
in developing heterosexual relationships. It was
because of the psychological disorders he went
through during his childhood. Another notable
personality characteristic of his personality
was that he felt exceedingly excited whenever
he broke open into others’ lodgings and
stole things from there. He was arrested for the
first time when he was thirteen years old on the
charges of weapon, arson and theft. It was during
the investigations that he confessed responsibility
or as many as eleven other burglaries. He committed
his first murder at the age of sixteen of a woman
who woke while William was ransacking her apartment.
His notorious killing spree continued for many
years from thereon. On one instance after committing
a murder he used the lipstick of the victim and
chalked the following lines on the wall, “For
Heavens sake, catch me before I kill more. I can’t
control myself.” In September 1946 he was
awarded three life sentences which he continues
to serve to date.
Other such adolescent killers include Mary Bell,
B.B., W.B. and Gustavo Adolfo. With regards to
what one derives after going through such horrific
accounts of juvenile serial killers one can easily
notice that it largely because of abnormal upbringing,
social boycott of the killers, physical abuse
during childhood and other such factors that help
in developing a serial killer. May we all learn
from this and start thinking of developing a society
which no longer serves as a breeding place for
people like William Heirens, B.B., W.B. and the
like.
