| Mentoring is
basically a relation ship b/w two persons where
by a person having greater experience, expertise
and wisdom counsels and helps another person to
develop both personally as well as professionally.
Where the purpose is to foster positive and constructive
relation ship between experienced state employees
who are the mentors and the less experienced employees.
On the other hand Career development is a long
-term process in dedication to the development
of professional knowledge, skills and expertise
for the employees. Career development is always
for the benefit of both the individual as well
as the organization as it provides to the individual
a more efficient, productive and successful environment.
Therefore, career development not only motivates
individuals who are interested in long-term career
goals but also provide them multiple ways to develop
their careers by effective planning and mentoring.
However, many people mix mentoring with job coaching,
there is a sharp distinction between these two,
job coaching is basically for some limited or
given task in hand, while mentoring is a long-term
goal oriented process. (Steinberg & Foley,
1999).
Mentoring and Career development
Therefore, mentor basically an experienced and
trusted adviser of an inexperienced person. In
today’s world of globalization and free
market economy, trade and business have gained
a lot of importance with in the country as well
as in the globe. So now business is not only restricted
within the state but also expanded vastly to whatever
part of the globe the businessmen feel to. However,
the trends have changed with the speedy development
of technology and modern tools of business. There
was a time that only trained business professionals
used to get into business but now, one who has
money though no experience and knowledge of business
ethics and legalities starts its own business.
Therefore, one important question comes to our
mind, that how do they succeed in this world of
competition where a number of experienced business
professionals are there since the beginning? The
simple answer to this question is “Mentor”.
In the present world of globalization and modernization,
new businessmen as well as old business professionals
both are working behind the knowledge and guidance
of some professional mentors, and this process
is known as mentoring. Now lets try to analyze
how mentoring plays its role in career development.
Many organizations are achieving professional
success under the guidance of a mentor. This is
due the changing organizational structure where
the careers have become boundary less, where the
hopes of the manger of a business company is totally
dependent on a network of a few intelligent mentors
to meet the challenges in the work places. (Suzanne
C de Janasz, Sherry E Sullivan, Vicki Whiting
2003) In this way mentors play a very important
role in developing the business career, as they
are the key element for the bright career of business.
Specifically the role that multiple mentors play
in the various departments of a business company
as they have the full potential and capacity to
leverage for the career of personal success with
in the boundaries of the organization
Actually in USA competition is not only among
the business corporations but the owners who belong
to different races, so indirectly the challenges
related to career development is due to the racial
discrimination in the profession. For instance
some corporations are owned by the whites and
some by other racial minorities, so here it becomes
a matter of self-respect an ego for both the communities
to lead in the capital market on both national
as well as international level. Therefore, it
is observed that the high-potential minorities
usually take off after they reach to the middle
management professionally while on the other side
the whites achieve a more promising professional
career by entering a very fast track and minorities
on contrary who became executives after their
middle management basically enjoy developmental
relationships with their mentors. (David A Thomas,
2001)
Furthermore, in order to achieve profession
gain, good career advice along support and positive
perspective, a mentoring relationship is proved
to be the most suitable and appropriate in this
regard. However, the companies who do not enjoy
mentoring relationships face a slow career development
process. At the same time mentors are also trained
by the companies in regard to career development
as a relation to the HR professionals. (Kathryn
Tyler 2004) therefore, along other professional
training programs, mentoring has also entered
into the list. Now organizations are focusing
more on training mentors for a stronger and faster
business development, which at the same time ensures
the prospectus of these career oriented mentors.
However, women are equally being offered to such
mentoring programs where they use their mentoring
skills outside the company to indirectly benefit
their company as well as themselves as gaining
more experience to get hold as a strong mentor
for its organization. For instance they communicate
to their clients during lunch hours or meet them
at lunch in person do develop close relationships
to bridge the cultural and racial gaps among the
very customers, clients and the organization.
Moreover, a new trend has started in the market
to select mentors ensuring good talent and high
skills in person as a mentor. Big organizations
for instance, Honeywell's Aerospace Electronic
Systems Group, identify managers from different
organizations who are highly skillful and talented
to be trained and used as mentors. (William Atkinson.
2002) In furtherance of this objective, such companies
also integrate the performance of such managers
working as mentors to give an annual review and
produce competitive environment for them. This
is worked under the IMPD (Integrated Performance
Management and Development)
Nonetheless mentoring has been a very important
aspect in the development of careers. Though it
is an unofficial method of career developing but
it resulted into fast productivity with quality
work in the work place. So career development
via mentoring works as a non-training intervention
as it provides to the individual a bright future
and long term professional goals. it has also
proved to be a motivational force for career development
for professionals related to different fields.
Moreover, a successful mentor should have a
very impressive and bright personality, if an
individual is very much social, broad vision,
flexible and compassionate, it best suits to his
personality with the profession. Such individuals
have more chances in career development. Basically
this hidden skill as a person makes a mentor more
receptive, responsive, open and independent as
a whole to work for the organization. At the same
time to achieve successive mentoring behavior,
the mentors are required to participate in different
mentoring program for learning the latest techniques.
This not only helps in career development but
also develops conflict resolution skills and effective
communication tools in the mentors that can help
in any emergency situation in areas of conflict
among the very members of the organization and
its other employees or customers.
