| With the full
name of Bartolome de Las Casas (1474-1566), Les
Casas enjoyed a famous position amongst the Indians
and other natives of the America not only as one
of the only self-educated entrepreneurs of the
then era but also for the various causes of Indians
which became the major objectives of his later
life. In particular the regions of present day
Haiti and Dominican Republic to this day regard
Les Casas as a brave and committed businessmen
as well as somewhat of a priest as he fought and
advocated the various causes of Indians against
the Spaniards and the Vatican, two of the Imperial
powers with significant influence in the said
regions during the 15th and 16th century, as well
as in the later centuries. Les Casa's most famous
and outstanding accomplishment for the Indians
of the said region includes his defense for the
native people of America, who are commonly famous
as Indians even to this day. (Eatough, 1996).
However the following paper will point out some
of the different methods used by the enemies of
Spain through the relacion of Les Casas in the
said region of America during the 16th century
and beyond. In this respect, one may observe that
Les Casas enjoyed a truly respectable position
in the eyes of the Indians, and such was the height
of this respect that Les Casas was even the recognition
of chief of the Indians.
One of the methods through which the enemies
of Spain used the relacions of Les Casas was the
excellent relation enjoyed by the later with both
the Spaniard rulers as well as those in authority
at the Vatican, namely Pope Paul III. Les Casas's
excellent relations with both the colonial powers
were thus used as an excellent means of propagating
the ideas and philosophy which though appeared
to be truly passionate and favored the Indian
in both their freedom as well as choice of selecting
their rulers. On the contrary, historical realities
narrate a totally different and more than a cruel
picture of the same populations under both the
colonial powers. (Eatough, 1996).
For example, Les Casas aimed to protect the Indians,
fight for their causes, and advocated for the
freedom and choice of the larger Indian populations
under the Spanish and Vatican colonial rule. Les
Casas also advocated that the Indian population
should be converted to the Catholic religion through
peaceful and persuasive means, which at the same
time respected the sovereignty of the Indian populations.
In reality however, the case was exactly the opposite,
as Les Casas position as both a Dominican monk
in 1522 as well as the Bishop of Chiapas miserably
failed to put his utopian ideologies into practice.
This is perhaps best worded by one Juan Fried,
who writing in his famous "Fried and Keen,
Las Casas and Indigenism in the Sixteenth Century"
comments that if the utopian ideologies of Les
Casas had been implemented, for example his views
on how the Indians should be governed or allow
them to govern themselves, the Spanish provinces
of American would have turned into densely populated
regions instead of living as a minority without
any economic, political or social autonomy nor
privileges of any sort. Hence, one may deduce
that Les Casa's ideologies merely remained a propaganda
and no more than an extension of otherwise dominant
and somewhat cruel policies of the both the Spaniards
as well as the those in Vatican. The life and
works of Les Casas, however provided him a symbolic
place, in the lives of the average Indians, simply
because of the attempts to favor the latter, even
though in reality it was no more than a propaganda.
Some Indian tribes even went to the extent of
regarding Les Casas as a god, such as the Mayan
Indians, as well as those who were brutally victimized
by the then colonial rulers.
Perhaps the most profound method used by the enemies
of Spain was the written work of Les Casas, titled,
"Brevissima relacion de Las destruccion de
Las Indias", which provides a comprehensive
and detailed account of the scale of genocide
and list of cruelties meted out against the Indian
populations on this part of the world. These written
accounts were captured by the enemies of Spain,
and propagated to provide evidence about the actual
and true state of affairs under the Spanish rule
in the region under discussion.
Yet, one of the most profound and realistic revelations
as uncovered by Les Casas and rightly used by
the enemies of Spain to claim their right on the
New World were detailed studies on the Indian
populations. This information included the fact
that Indians of the said regions were no less
human and civilized than those living in other
parts of the world. According to Les Casas, the
urban populations as well as those residing in
Mexico and Peru were more or equal to the highly
civilized societies of Rome, Greece, and Egypt
as well as models and people of the Renaissance
era on the European continent. These revelations
were undoubtedly some of the most heartbreaking
set of information and more than proved that Indians
of the said regions were truly governed by those
who cared little for the people who to date are
regarded as one of the most backward. The realities
are on the contrary as also reiterated in the
above lines, as these people practiced lives and
virtually every discipline similar to some of
the highly civilized societies of the world, including
those of Rome, Greece and Egypt (Eatough, 1996).
